Valves, what do they do?
Industries use valves to perform various functions including the processing of products and rendering services to consumers, both businesses, and individuals. The following are the primary functions of a valve:
- Stop/Start. The valve opens to allow the flow and closes to stop the flow. Such systems that do not need the flow throttled.
- Throttle or control. Valves are used for speed control to regulate the speed of fluid content of a pipe according to preferred movement capacity to flow through the system.

Method of control of industrial valves
The application of the industrial valve will determine the mechanism of control. However, two types of control exist for controlling flow through a valve.
- Linear motion control. Valves use a closure member that moves in a straight line to allow, stop or throttle the flow. The closure device could be a disc, slat or flexible material, like a diaphragm.
- Rotary motion. A rotary control valve rotates a disc or ellipse at the circular shaft extending over the diameter of an orifice.
